The Pants

Blog-worthy.

Ava has a certain pair of pants that are a bone of contention in our family.  Whenever I see them, of late, they illicit an eye roll from me.  Ava has, in the past year, formed her own fashion sense and ideas on clothing matches.  We definitely pick our battles with what she wears and when.  I always hope she winds up with something matching for church on Sunday mornings.  Most Sunday mornings she does pretty well!  For Sunday night small group, she seems to get most creative with her idea of what matches.  ;-)

Back to the pants.  They are striped with purple, green, yellow, orange, white and black.  I think they originally came with a coordinating Halloween shirt of some sort, as a gift last year, from a grandparent.  Over a year ago.  A pair of pants that last over a year during these ever-changing-size years is like being 112 in dog years.  A pair of 112 year-old pants.  Catch my drift?

Because most colors exist in this pair of pants, she thinks most colored shirts match these pants.  It always seems to be the crazy, patterned pair of pants that have the most "staying power" in her closet.  Fortunately the pants have become a little too short (phew!) recently, so they got ousted from her fashion choices.

Since September, we've also noticed that Ava doesn't like jeans.  Come on!?!  What kid doesn't like jeans?  Or mashed potatoes?  My kid, that's who.  This past season, I chose not to go to consignment sales in hopes of SAVING money.  Yes, I know.  Although I consider them, aside from the cotton gin, one of the best inventions / ideas in the Southeast, Ava didn't often agree with my choice in consignment sale clothing.  So outfits I bought at consignment sales would sit, untouched, in her closet for months.  Unfortunately I couldn't return consignment sale finds that weren't her preference.  (Ha.  She sounds like she is 30, doesn't she?)

I am happy to announce, in the past few weeks, she has been more open to wearing jeans, since I mentioned (while standing at the bus stop on a very cold, windy morning) that wind won't really blow through jeans like it will blow through stretchy pants.

This summer while at Target, while we stood in the check-out line, I held up a pair of shorts I had picked out for her.  I actually asked Ava if she would wear the shorts I had picked out.  She said "no."  I told her I sincerely appreciated her honesty when she said she wouldn't wear them.  "Thank you, you just saved me $6." :)

Ava LOVES stretchy pants.  She LIVES in black stretchy pants.  Doug has mentioned that Ava won't wear something unless it is stretchy and something comfortable enough to fall asleep in.  In early November, armed with this newfound information and a 30% Kohl's coupon, I bought what seemed like every stretchy cotton "everyday" dress Kohl's had to offer.  They were super cute, LOUD girlie prints.  Kohl's also had various stretchy pants in solid colors that coordinated.  Jackpot!  Ava liked all of the choices.  We had a little fashion tutorial on how to figure out which leggings went with which dresses.  The outfits seem to work out pretty well for school, too.  It helps that they're crazy cheap, too!

I can only imagine what our fashion future holds a decade from now.  For now, though, we're happy and she's happy.  Double bonus.

Peace, love and THE pants,
Shelly, Doug, Ava and Liam
