Ava is One Year Old!

Happy birthday, sweetie!

My how time flies! I can't believe it's already been a year? It seems like just yesterday we were packing our bags for the hospital.

Today Ava left for day care donned in a pretty birthday dress (and tennis shoes :-). We sent "birthday baby pancakes" with her, to share with her fellow classmates. A healthier alternative to frosted cupcakes, I suppose. She LOVES these pancakes and eats one every morning. The day care provider suggested something like bananas or pancakes, because everyone could eat them. :-)

We don't have any elaborate (i.e.-Chuck E. Cheese :-)) plans to celebrate her birthday, just a quiet night at home with family, enjoying time together. Maybe we'll scrounge up a cupcake so she can practice blowing out a birthday candle! We're looking forward to celebrating her birthday with grandparents and other family in a few weeks.

Ava's first year doctor appointment is next week, so I will be sure to post her "stats" after the appointment, along with a one-year picture of Ava in (or somewhere around) her rocking chair. Her latest craze is climbing up onto the chair, standing in the chair (rocking), climbing down, and doing it all over again. I think she could actually do this for hours and never get bored! She now also climbs on her "car" and gets close to "surfing" around in the living room. We can't take our eyes off of her for a minute! (Although she hasn't had any horrible falls, yet). She's ever-so-curious about her world! We love to watch her learning and growing.

Our little baby isn't a baby anymore. She's officially a toddler! I told Doug this morning that we must not be that bad at being parents, if she made it to the one year mark! ;-) She actually LOOKS like a toddler now, too. Sad, in a way, that our baby is no longer a baby, but we're so HAPPY to see her thriving and happy.

You're our gift from heaven! We love you sweetie pie!

Quite A Pear

After swimming lessons this Saturday, Ava and Daddy had a mid-morning snack. Doug was eating a pear and Ava wanted the pear. (She's into chewing on fruit whole these days).

So, they both compromised and ate the pear - together.

Ava thought it was funny and kept giggling, mid-bite.

I will definitely treasure this picture for years to come!

Yum!

About a week ago, Ava woke up from her nap STARVING. She is really into finger foods lately, and prefers to feed herself. Peas and corn niblets work out perfectly! As you can see in this video, she had quite the appetite for corn and peas.

She lets us know how much she enjoys something, with her sound effects while eating.

The Parade Wave

Grandpa Dean and Grandma Dolly sent an early birthday present to Ava, recently. Ava LOVES her new red wagon. When I was little, I had the same wagon (Uncle Danny and Aunt Linda bought my red wagon). The wagon is built to last!

Ava's latest craze is waving at everyone and anything she passes by. When we took her for a ride in her wagon the other day, she was waving at the neighborhood, although no one was out. She waves with both hands, too, so it really does look like she's practicing to become some sort of pageant queen. I promise she does this on her own!

Relaxing in the Wagon

In the attached video, she decided to COMPLETELY relax in the wagon. I can almost hear a Jimmy Buffett song playing in the background... :-)

Water, Water, Everywhere

This past weekend Doug stayed with Ava in the water, during her swim class at the Y. She seemed to enjoy the water and songs.

It was a big deal this week, with the teacher submerging the babies and quickly moving them underwater toward the parents, for a brief second (all while holding them). Ava cried when Doug handed her over to the instructor. She stopped crying for a second, the teacher then submerged her, pushing her underwater toward Doug and letting her pop out of the water, into Doug's arms. Ava was a little startled, I think, coming up from underwater. All of the kids had the "deer in headlights" look on their face when they came out of the water.

When I gave her a bath afterward, she did not want to sit in the tub, especially when I poured water over her head to wash-out the shampoo. For a few baths, now, she has cried when we walk into the bathroom. Smarty pants. But, if she stands up in the tub, I just try to hug her (while she's still standing in the tub, not letting her get out) and eventually get her to sit down again. She'll get used to it, I'm sure. It'll just take a little time.

This picture is the one taken right after Ava was "dunked".

Peace, love and H20,
Shelly

Cheap Labor and Good Intentions

It's funny how conscious I have become about the cleanliness of my kitchen floor, since Ava's been around. I wish I could clean it more often... Ahh, the best laid plans of mice and men.

Cheap Labor
Video sent by thecareyclan
I enlisted some cheap labor to help clean the floor the other day. As you can see, Ava did a bang-up job "Swiffing", after I had finished cleaning. It's amazing how babies want to do what you're doing, eat what you're eating, say what you're saying. As to the swiffing, she's pretty effective! (When is this whole "allowance" thing supposed to start?)

Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to "Swiff" I go...

Ava is Eleven Months Old

Better late than never... Ava actually turned 11 months on 02/28.

Ava is a "mover and a shaker" these days. As you can see in the attached pictures, this month's pictures in the rocking chair didn't really happen in the rocking chair. She doesn't stay-put in one spot long enough to take pictures, lately. So, these are the best we could do. We'll try to take others when she feels like sitting. :-)

Ava has three teeth, now. This past weekend, tooth #3 popped through. It is the second upper tooth from the front, on the left side. She doesn't have an easy time with teething, so I hope they all come in at once, so she can be done with the pain. She really tries to talk, lately. She will focus intently on your face if you try to speak to her, or say a word clearly to her.

Her vocabulary words now include:
"da-da"
"ma-ma" (indiscriminant. I think I'm in the "da-da" category...)
"daw" (dog, or any other animal, these days)
"wow"
"woah"
"bah" (ball)
"kah" (book)
"mah" (more)
"Tah" (Santa)
"ho, ho, ho"
"Dah" (All-done, although this is occasional that she'll say this)
"yuh, yuh, yuh" (yuck, yuck, yuck)

She will shake her head "no" if she doesn't want something. She can also mimic us and say "uh-oh". She was teething last week, but our fun-loving daughter has returned to us this week. :-) She LOVES to read. Her favorite books are: "Elmo Loves You", "Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?" If she isn't too tired, she would prefer that you read book after book to her. We've read 5+ books to her in one sitting, she likes them that much. She now brings books to us, so we'll read them to her. She likes to kiss all of the different animals on the pages of her books.

Ava waves at anything and everything, lately. The other day, we took her for a stroll, and she seemed to be practicing her "parade wave", as if she was a pageant queen. It was so funny to see! (And no one was around to wave back...Cue the crickets quietly singing in the background, and imagine Ava waving all over the place, smiling with her crinkled-up nose.) Funny stuff!

She just learned how to sip out of a straw within the past week. She eats most table food, now. She will point to something we're eating and grunt, which is her way of requesting she be fed the food we're eating. We gave her a piece of a diced onion last night, because she was asking for it. She didn't request the onion again, after eating it! :-) She loves mandarin oranges, green beans, strawberry banana applesauce, baked apple slices, bananas, cooked pasta, toast with peanut butter, green peas, "baby pancakes", and toast with peanut butter. I will try to post the recipe for the pancakes. She had edamame beans (soybeans) yesterday and LOVED them. She couldn't get enough! She doesn't prefer diced peaches or diced (cooked) tomatoes too much. I try to sneak them in when I can.

At day care, they say Ava is a "good eater". They say that she eats better than most kids in class, eating whatever they put down in front of her. I try to vary her "menu", so she gains as much exposure to different foods as possible. Doug and I aren't very picky people, so I hope that continues with what Ava eats.

She walks very well. She doesn't quite run yet, but takes giant steps when she wants to get somewhere quickly. She likes to toddle around in the woodchips at the park. She also likes to walk on the pavement in our neighborhood court, but doesn't seem to like the way the pavement feels on her hands, when she loses her balance. She doesn't cry, but looks at her hands curiously.

She loves to be chased. Lately, about 30 minutes before bed, she likes for us to rough-house with her. She'll lay on the ground when she wants to be "tickled". She'll just cackle when she's being tickled. She laughs, crawling away, when we try to chase her. She loves for us to help her do a somersault. She'll stand up, put her head on the ground and we'll flip her legs over.

She thinks it is hilarious for us to puff our cheeks full of air, and for her to use her hands to push the air out of our cheeks. Cheap entertainment!

When we try to give her a liquid vitamin in the morning, she's gotten to the point that she will spit it out some days. She knows the liquid vitamin bottle. When I pull out the bottle in the morning, she'll cry (not REALLY cry, just get upset). I'm sure she hates the taste; it smells horrific. When at the doctor the other week, the doctor offered some Infant Tylenol for Ava's teething pain. When the doctor tried to give the Tylenol to her by mouth, Ava spit it out very efficiently. It made me feel better that even a DOCTOR couldn't get Ava to swallow medicine...

She prefers Daddy's company lately. She seems to like baths, too, but doesn't like water being dumped on her head, to wash-out the shampoo. She LOVES to have her teeth brushed. I use a fingertip toothbrush, and she enjoys chewing on it. She tries to brush her own hair with a hairbrush, comb or a toothbrush. It's pretty cute.

She sleeps well. She will go to bed at 7:30 or 8:00 pm and sleep until 7:00 a.m. She has been doing this for quite some time, now. When we put her to bed, we normally put her into her sleep sack, pacifier in-mouth, put "Bun" or some other cuddly creature next to her face, kiss her 'good night', carry her upstairs, turn on her "waves" sound machine, humidifier, put her down and turn off the light. 95% of the time, she doesn't cry, but goes to sleep immediately.

There is a kangaroo puppet on the Baby Gallileo DVD that Ava adores. Whenever the kangaroo appears on the TV screen, Ava gets super-excited. She likes anything with music. It is so sweet to hear her occasionally sing. It doesn't happen too often, but when it does, it melts your heart!

Dinners out have become less frequent, depending on Ava's mood that night. For the past few weekends she has really been teething "something fierce", so we decided to forego dinners at more expensive restaurants. We ate at Taco Bell one Friday night. I told Doug that it was one of the more enjoyable dinners out that I've had, because Ava wasn't too tired (didn't cry), wasn't fidgety, and we were able to take our time (as much as parents can "take time" :-). We even stopped and got a Starbucks coffee before venturing home. Ahhh, the good life.

I must mention this story... one night when Ava was particularly cranky, we went to Houlihan's. Normally a "safe" place to go with her for dinner... Not the case this night. A 40+ couple was sitting at a table next to us, but both sitting on the same side of the table, facing me. Ava was in between myself and the couple, and became extremely wiggly. I know she was tired. I felt like we were on parade in front of this couple. They kept whispering into each others' ear. I felt like I couldn't look at them, because they were already looking at me. I should've just stared back. Being the super-conscientious person (now mom) that I am, I was not in a happy place. I asked Doug if we could just get our food to go, because Ava was just tired and not ready to sit still. We ordered our food to go, ended-up "wolfing" half of it down at the table (in take-out containers). Maybe I should've just sat with my back to them? That would've helped my stress level, even if Ava was crying...

Luckily I was able to relax after the couple left (not because of us, but because they were done eating). Another couple at a different table told us how "cute" Ava was. When I mentioned about the other couple and feeling like I was on parade, the woman (also a new grandma to an 11-month old boy) said "You're the mom, so of course you are more sensitive / conscientious about things like that." She mentioned nicely that Ava wasn't bothering them at all. That made me feel better. I was just glad the other couple left, helping my stress level. Of course, Ava went to sleep two minutes into the car ride home. Evenings like this aren't Ava's fault, (they are ours for dragging her out, I guess), but they're not fun, to say the least. Here's to long, philosophical conversations at the table, over dinner and coffee, with baby in tow.

Other than nights where she is too tired to go out, she is an absolute sweetie-pie. She's her own little person now. The baby food jars of food are few and far-between, because she likes to feed herself. It's so fun to watch her become the little person she is. God reveals her personality to us more and more each day. We've been blessed by her health, her sweetness, her giggles, hugs and kisses, and her love.

Sweet Ava, we can't believe you'll be a big girl soon, at a year old!

We love you so very much,
Mommy and Daddy

Busy as a Bumble Bee

I enjoy sitting down to relax, breathe, and reflect, as I'm sure most people do. Since Ava's birth(and especially since she's mobile now), I have been in a perpetual state of motion (thanks in part to a few morning cups 'o coffee).

When Ava was first born and people would call and ask "So, what did you do today?", I would think to myself, what did I NOT do today, but what DID I accomplish? I lived. I changed diapers. I fed Ava. She's not starving. She's sleeping well. I was successful today! The post I created when Ava was very small says it all: "Eat, sleep, diaper change, repeat".

It's interesting how much time I thought I would have to do things, before Ava arrived. I guess I romanticized the thought of being a Mom. Oh contraire, mon frere. Yet it has gotten easier. Still busy, but easier. We've fallen into a routine and know what Ava needs (this happened fairly early). I'm sure it will get even easier over time.

My Pa always said "you find time for the things you WANT to do," with which I completely agree. Thinking about that, the song "Cat's in the Cradle" comes to mind. I struggle with working full-time, attempting to be the best wife to Doug, best Mom to Ava, have my house clean, bills organized, dishes washed, laundry done, remember everyone's social security #'s, doctor's appointment times, etc. It seems the most important job right now, to me, is raising Ava to the best of my ability, as these are the especially critical years. Right now all the medial tasks seem to get done, somehow. We would love for Ava to have a little brother or sister sometime down the road. I just CAN'T IMAGINE how many clones I will need in order to accomplish everything. Kudos to parents of two or more! My heart goes out to you!

I will continue to say big prayers for ALL parents. It makes me smile to see a mom in a grocery store juggling two kids and multi-tasking. It's got to be the hardest and most rewarding job anyone could have. I feel privileged to have been blessed with Ava, and will try to find time for the things I really WANT to do, and what I should do...

Yay for playgrounds, sunny days, laying in soft green grass, bare feet, feeling the breeze on your cheeks and not looking at your watch! Pure bliss!

Shelly

Say A Little Prayer...

Hey all-

I hope this message finds you well this morning. The sun is shining here in the Atlanta 'burbs.

If you could please do me a favor, please say a big prayer for Doug today. He is on his way to take his (hopefully) last registration exam this morning. It starts at 9 a.m. and will last approximately six hours. I know he would appreciate it.

He won't know the results for approximately 6-8 weeks, so pray for patience in waiting, too!

Have a great day!

With love,
Shelly

The Little Swimmer

We went to Ava's first "swim lesson" Saturday at the YMCA. They enroll babies as early as 8 months or so, for swim classes. They're more like "get used to the water" classes. The class lasted from 10-10:30, which is typically smack-dab in the middle of her morning nap. Fortunately she got up early, so we dressed her in a swim diaper, a rubberized diaper and a bathing suit before heading to the pool. All layers required. :-) (No chance of contamination with all of those layers, I'm thinkin'!)

Ava seemed to enjoy the pool, and was pretty mellow about the whole ordeal. I tried to keep moving with her in the pool, swinging her legs underwater, bouncing with her, etc. We kicked, used a "noodle", blew bubbles, swam on front and back, splashed, sang songs, entered the pool, bounced up and down, etc. She liked when we sang songs, and she started rocking-out a few times. (She shakes her head from side to side whenever she hears music). She started clapping during some songs, too. I think the 30-something parents (including myself) probably looked ridiculous swimming circles in the pool, singing our ABC's and songs about "flapjacks". All for a good cause, though...the things we do for babies.

All 10 babies were right around a year old. I was really surprised by the number of dads that came to the lesson and got in the water with their baby. I thought that was great, to see such involvement!

One little girl, named Addison, didn't like the water at all. (She is to the left of Ava in the picture where they're sitting on the side of the pool). Doug was able to stand on the "sidelines" and take pictures / video. When we watched the video later, we realized just how much little Addison didn't like the water. She was crying the entire time! Fortunately Ava seemed to just be "taking it all in", and going with the flow (literally). She looked over at Addison a few times as if she was thinking: "why are you crying?"

We also sat the babies on the side of the pool, turned them around, and had them slide into the pool on their bellies numerous times, too. This in hopes of teaching them the safe way to enter the pool.

Our subdivision doesn't have a pool (what were they thinking?). Georgia is sweltering-hot and humid in the summer, so we decided to look for a neighboring subdivision with a pool, become recreational members and be able to use the pool. We're not going on any super-extravagant trips this year, so I thought it would be nice to treat ourselves to mini-vacation(s) at the local neighborhood pool. :-) I'm hoping we can just help Ava get used to water, so she feels safe around it. I think it's so important!

Next week it's Doug's turn in the pool with Ava, where they will submerge the babies, if the parents are comfortable with it. We'll see how Ava does... She HATES to have water poured over her head in the bathtub. Hmmm.....

Splishy Splashy (and other ridiculous baby water phrases),

It's a DAWWWWW!

While having some neighbors over for dinner the other night, I commented on how dumb I must sound to other people, in passing. Okay, reserve comments, please... Lately I'm repeating things over and over, saying everything I do loudly and clearly, in hopes that Ava's vocabulary will flourish. (i.e. - "Twenty dwarfs took turns doing handstands on the carpet..." - from the movie Bugsy). We learned yesterday that our attempts aren't futile. :-)

I was feeding Ava some cereal in her high chair. The cereal box had an image of Clifford, the Big Red Dog on the back, which Ava noticed. She lit up, pointing to the cereal box and said "Dawwww!", over and over again in her sweet little "excited" voice. It's amazing how little things like this make me the happiest person on the planet. She also says "wow" and "ball" (bahhh).

Ava points at EVERYTHING lately, and is trying so hard to talk. She's just so curious about her world right now. When we ask her to point to certain things while we read a book to her, she is able to do so some of the time. She's very selective about things lately: when she'll give kisses, when she will point to things, when she will repeat things.

She is also Daddy's girl, lately. She seems to prefer Daddy's attention over mine, and gets uber-excited when he comes home from work. I need to catch that on video sometime. Dad is "Da-da" but "Mama" isn't, yet :-) I'm sure she'll say it with meaning soon enough.

It is a wonder for us to see her learning about her world. I can't believe it's been almost a year, now, that she's been hangin' out with Mom and Dad!

With love,
Shelly

She Brings Books

Ava is a little bookworm. Whenever we let her wander for a minute, we always find her in the same spot... sitting next to our stairs / bookshelf, with a book in hand.

A few days ago, I saw that she had reached for a book. I sat a bit away from her, and asked her if she would "bring me the book" so I could read it to her. She looked at me with this confused look, at first. When I asked her again to bring the book to me, she did. I put her in my lap and read the book to her. She then wanted me to read other books to her. I'm glad she understands this now. Previously, piles of books mounted, as she frequently pulls them down from their places.

It is amazing what Ava understands. I'm trying to make more "requests" of her, to see if she can demonstrate an action after hearing something we've said to her. Just yesterday I asked her to shut the door to a cabinet. She wasn't convinced she should, but she closed the door.

She picked up something the other day that I didn't want her to eat, and I said "yuck, yuck, yuck". She tried to mimic what I was saying, which was pretty cute.

Ava loves remote controls and anything electronic. She brought a remote into our kitchen while I was getting dinner ready yesterday. When I asked if she was pushing the "button", she tried to say "button", but ended-up saying something like "ah-bum".

Lately, if we strip her down to her diaper before bed, she runs around like a wild woman. She gets her "second wind" and her little legs don't stop!

A Quick Trip to Tennessee

Grandpa Dean and Grandma Dolly are visiting Tennessee this week. We ended-up meeting them half-way to Nashville this past Saturday. We went to O'Charley's and to a Toys 'R Us, in Chattanooga. It was a short visit, but Ava got some spur-of-the-moment Grandma and Grandpa-time, and vice-versa, for a few hours.

As you can see in these pictures, Ava got to show off her new walking skills for Grandma and Grandpa. Ava also cracks up at just about anything, these days. She thinks she is pretty funny, and cackles when you try to chase her.

Grandma and Grandpa spoiled Ava at Toys 'R Us, with a new Baby Einstein video (Baby Neptune), a bathing suit for our upcoming "swim class" in March and a pink Atlanta Braves hat (which ironically has a big "A" on the front, working double-duty for "Atlanta Braves" and for "Ava"). Thank you Grandma Dolly and Grandpa Dean! We can't wait to try out Ava's swim-legs!

About the maribou headband (and other headbands with large bows you may see on this blog)... I searched for the biggest and most ridiculously-huge bows I could get my hands on, for Ava. Thus the pictures with these fun headbands and bows. Such sassiness :-) Interestingly enough, Ava will keep these headbands on her head for quite some time.

Yesterday was warm enough for me to take Ava to the park near our house, after day care. She enjoyed toddling around in the woodchips, taking a few spills. She tried eating the woodchips on a few occasions, but I managed to get them out of her hands before they were mouth-bound...

We hope you make it a great week. We're looking forward to Spring, around these parts!

With love,
Shelly and Doug

Happy Valentine's Day!

We hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day today! (And Happy Birthday to Ginger!!!)

Grandma Pam came down to Georgia to visit this past weekend. We all had a great time with her. Ava seemed to warm up to her very quickly, and while in her high chair, played peek-a-boo with Grandma.

Grandma Pam came down on Wednesday night, after Ava's bedtime. Ava got to wake up and play with Grandma Pam Thursday through Monday.

Ava was in rare form on Friday night when we went out to dinner. She was cackling, swinging her feet, just being an extremely happy girl. Her latest fun trick is rocking her head back and forth while listening to music. She's been doing this for some time now. It's hilarious. She LOVES MUSIC. She has an "MP3" player that plays kids songs (sung by kids in a British accent), and switches the song while holding it. It's hysterical to hear her change the songs, as if to say "Nah, I don't like that one...What's next?" So, Friday night Ava was rocking-out, swinging her head from side-t0-side, to the music in Doug's truck.

When we sing "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands", Ava will clap her hands during the song. She's some fun!

Ava started teething Saturday, and was miserable. She never falls asleep on me (she typically will only go to sleep in her crib), but she fell asleep next to me in bed on Saturday morning and Sunday morning. I think she is cutting lots of teeth right now, but especially her eyeteeth. She doesn't have an easy time with teething. Poor thing. Hopefully they all come in at once, and we don't have to worry about teething for a while! (I did find "Hyland's teething tablets" yesterday, which seem to work like a charm.)

Grandma Pam brought some treats to Georgia for Ava: a "princess" music box, a cute teddy bear with sunglasses and two outfits (and bunny slippers), and a doll that you zip / button / tie, etc. Ava seemed to enjoy the teddy bear, especially!

Grandma babysat Ava while Doug and I went to the annual Preston Partnership dinner on Saturday night, held at Anthony's in Buckhead. Doug and I had a great time. Talk about an eventful babysitting experience for my Mom, though! One of our neighbors knocked on the door, asking if Doug cut down any trees, a fire truck came to our neighbor's house and two neighbors then called the house. It turned-out that someone smelled gas in the neighborhood. The gas company called the fire department, who came to check the neighborhood. Another neighbor had a new driveway poured and coated it with kerosene, so the concrete wouldn't freeze overnight. Neighbors smelled this and got a little worried. So, fortunately everything turned-out okay. Sheesh!

Mom spoiled us by making oatmeal cookies, chicken nachos, sauteed cabbage and Cream of Winter soup while here with us. We didn't expect her to make these things, but really enjoyed her cooking! Even Ava ate some cabbage, carrots and some diced cantaloupe yesterday. (I think Ava really liked the cantaloupe and how it felt on her gums).

We took Ava back to the doctor Monday, because her cough hadn't cleared up entirely, after her round of antibiotics. The doctor said that she had a slight cold and that she was fine. (I just didn't want her cough to get worse, especially since she just finished the antibiotics). She was also running a fever but that was due to the teething. The doctor said she could tell Ava was "trying to be good, but she's hurting" (from her teeth). So, it was good to confirm that she's okay.

Ava got a cute outfit in the mail from Grandma and Grandpa Carey, which she is wearing today, for Valentine's Day. She got a card with fun Valentine enclosures from Grandma and Grandpa Griffith. She got a big stuffed dog from Mommy and Daddy, and seems to love it.

She is REALLY trying to talk now, and points at something if she wants it.

Well, we wish you all the happiest of Valentine's!!!

With love,
Shelly and Doug

(Smiling in between "teething" episodes)
